to call sinners

“Those who are well do not need a physician, but the sick do. Go and learn the meaning of the words, ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’ I did not come to call the righteous but sinners.” (MT 9: 12-13)

How comforting are these words: “I did not come to call the righteous but sinners.” We have our limits, our wounds, and our bad memories, and they seem to appear at the worst possible moments—when we experience difficult times in our relationship and when the unity and peace is the most wanted. But Our Lord knows it perfectly, and we can come to Him as to the “physician” and ask Him for help. He is merciful and He always answers.

“Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest, says the Lord.” (Gospel Acclamation)
