I have come not to abolish but to fulfill

“I have come not to abolish but to fulfill. Amen, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or the smallest part of a letter will pass from the law, until all things have taken place.” (MT 5: 17-19)

God the Father, Who gave us the commandments, also gave us His Son, Who was sent to “fulfill everything.” The reason for the commandments was to keep us safe, to protect us when we are in the world, and to show us the direction to heaven. But the Commandments weren’t the last word of God. He gave us His Son. Our Lord is with us “until all things have taken place.”

“Your words, Lord, are Spirit and life; You have the words of everlasting life.” (Gospel Acclamation)
