Which of them was the greatest

“An argument arose among the disciples about which of them was the greatest.” (LK 9: 46) 

Rivalry and intolerance are the common weaknesses among us as human beings; we are used to comparing, to competing, and we don’t like people who are different. It was a problem with “the disciples”; it could be also be a problem for us when, for example, we think: I am better for this position than the other person. Fortunately for us, our positions mean just more work, more responsibility, but no greater income or prestige. We are to serve, like Our Lord.
