So must the Son of Man be lifted up

“And just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, so that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life.” (JN 3: 14-15)

“So must the Son of Man be lifted” and this “must” is about God’s plan for our salvation, is about us, our “eternal life,” and about our future. We know that for God, there is no “must”—He is God and He is free. So when He decided about this “must,” it was only a measure of His love. We are so loved.

“The Son of Man must be lifted up, so that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life.” (Gospel Acclamation)
